How are SE and Reiki different?
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-oriented therapeutic approach based on neuroscience and nervous system regulation, focused on supporting healing from trauma and chronic stress. Sessions are body-oriented, done in a seated position, and do not involve massage or energy healing.
Reiki is a gentle energy-based practice focused on relaxation and overall well-being. Sessions are typically received lying down with light touch or hands held above the body.
Can SE and Reiki complement each other?Yes. Although they are different approaches, many people find both supportive for relaxation, grounding, and overall well-being.

What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a gentle, body-oriented therapeutic approach that supports nervous system regulation and healing from trauma, chronic stress, anxiety, and overwhelm. SE focuses on physical sensations and nervous system responses rather than only talking about past experiences.
What happens during an SE Session?
SE sessions are slow-paced, collaborative, and tailored to your individual needs. Sessions are typically done in a seated position and may include noticing body sensations, emotions, movement impulses, breath, and nervous system responses in the present moment. The process is designed to support regulation and safety without overwhelming the nervous system.
Do I need to believe in SE for it to work? No. Somatic Experiencing is not based on belief, spirituality, or energy healing. It is grounded in an understanding of the nervous system, stress physiology, and the body’s natural capacity to heal and regulate.
Is SE scary or overwhelming?
SE is designed to be a gentle and supportive process. Sessions work gradually and at a manageable pace using principles such as titration, which helps prevent overwhelm or re-traumatization. You are never required to relive traumatic experiences.
What can SE help with?SE may support individuals experiencing trauma, chronic stress, anxiety, panic, burnout, emotional overwhelm, nervous system dysregulation, and difficulty feeling grounded or safe. It can also support greater emotional resilience, embodiment, and self-awareness.
What should I wear to a session?Comfortable clothing is recommended so you can feel relaxed and at ease during the session.
Is SE a medical treatment?Somatic Experiencing is a therapeutic modality that supports nervous system regulation and emotional well-being, but it does not replace medical, psychological, or psychiatric care when needed.
Is SE bodywork, massage, or energy healing?
No. Somatic Experiencing is not massage, bodywork, or energy healing. Sessions are therapeutic, with attention given to bodily sensations, nervous system responses, and emotional experiences in a safe and supportive way.
How long is an SE session?
SE sessions are typically 50 minutes in duration unless otherwise discussed.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies for each individual depending on their needs, goals, and personal process. Some clients seek short-term support, while others choose longer-term therapeutic work.
Can SE be done remotely?
Yes. Somatic Experiencing sessions can also be offered online, allowing clients to engage in the work from the comfort of their own space.

Because the body remembers what the mind might suppress or forget, SE helps restore your nervous system's natural equilibrium without requiring you to extensively retell or relive your traumatic story. This makes it an incredibly safe and gentle modality. During sessions, we use several core techniques:
Tracking the "Felt Sense": We will guide you to tune into your internal physical sensations—like warmth, tension, tingling, or breath changes—to understand how your body reacts to stress and safety.
Resourcing: We work together to identify positive anchors (internal feelings of grounding or external comforts like a loved one or a safe space) that provide a deep sense of safety and stability to support you during the healing process.
Titration: To avoid overwhelm and prevent re-traumatisation, we approach difficult sensations or memories slowly, in very small, manageable doses.
Pendulation: We gently guide your awareness back and forth between states of discomfort and states of calm. This natural rhythmic movement helps your nervous system build resilience and expand its window of tolerance so that you do not become flooded by emotions.
Discharge and Completion: By observing subtle physical cues, we help your body safely complete the self-protective actions it couldn't finish during the trauma. This often leads to a natural physical release or "discharge"—such as trembling, crying, yawning, or feeling a wave of warmth—which signals that your nervous system is returning to a baseline of calm.

An SE Session is highly fluid, slow-paced, and tailored to your present-moment experience. Rather than pushing for intense emotional catharsis, SE values small, regulated shifts that create space for true integration and lasting healing. We may use frameworks like the SIBAM model (tracking Sensation, Image, Behaviour, Affect, and Meaning) to help you explore your experiences holistically and gently untangle overwhelming associations linked to the trauma.
-
Because it bypasses the need for an explicit narrative memory, SE is highly effective for individuals who struggle to articulate their trauma or who feel "stuck" despite years of traditional talk therapy. It is profoundly beneficial for treating:
Single-incident traumas (like accidents or medical trauma) and complex, developmental, or pre-verbal trauma (CPTSD).
Chronic stress, panic, anxiety, and depression.
Physical symptoms with no clear medical cause, such as chronic pain, fatigue, tension, or gastrointestinal issues.
